On the Northern slopes of Paarl Mountain you will find Pearl Mountain,
a fifth generation farm dating back to the 18th Century.
Originally established in 1747 as a blacksmith’s home and forge, today it is home to Pearl Mountain Wines,
Blacksmith’s Kitchen, and The Venue @ Pearl Mountain.
FROM THE FARMER
When I started farming Pearl Mountain (nee Uitkyk), I was 23 and the fourth generation Retief to farm here. At that time it was a table grape farm and remained so until the late 1990’s when I saw an opportunity for us to produce wine, a big step to take as I approached my fifties, although I hoped that at least one of my three sons would join me in the business.
Over the next years we replaced our table grapes with wine grapes and 2 hectares of olives, and in 2004 made our first wine. David, my eldest son, joined me full time in 2009. Zed joined us to run Blacksmith’s Kitchen in 2014, after we had renovated the oldest buildings (circa 1747) to accommodate it. Luke, the youngest, came home to take over from Zed in 2017.
We all, including David’s wife Lauren, our dogs, cat and free-range chickens, live on the farm and are involved in all aspects of its offerings and operations. Pearl Mountain also accommodates many of our personnel, of whom some are third generation on the farm.
